Harkness Memorial Park will evolve in stages, guided by a masterplan that is designed to meet community needs, adapt to population changes, and respond to climate change.

1972
Land allocated
Land for the future memorial park site is allocated by the State Government.

2010
GMCT established
The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) is established and allocated the future memorial park site by State Government.

2017
Vision and early concept
The foundational vision for the memorial park is established. The masterplan’s early concept is prepared and accepted by the GMCT Board.

2021
Community consultation begins
GMCT embarks on an extensive period of community outreach and consultation. Local community members, Traditional Owners, industry experts, cultural and religious community groups, government bodies and key sector stakeholders are invited to have their say on the masterplan across several initiatives.

2023
Masterplan published
The final masterplan is publicly released in February 2023, and work begins on the first stage. Draft designs are workshopped with community members and key stakeholders, with ongoing feedback shaping the plans.

2024-2025
Detailed design begins
Working with Principal Designer ASPECT Studios, Architectus and WSP, GMCT develops the detailed design for the first stage of works. This phase focused on the look and feel of the memorial park, covering everything from paint colours and tree positioning to burial options and ceremonial building layout.

Early-2025
Preparing for construction
The site name ‘Harkness Memorial Park’ is formally approved. GMCT prepares to publicly share the detailed design of the first stage and to break ground; ensuring all technical, regulatory and community requirements are met.

Mid-2025
Early works begin
Planned commencement of early civil works, including initial site preparation, landscape grading and tree planting to establish the site’s natural environment.

Late-2025
Major construction commences
Planned construction moves into full swing with major infrastructure development commencing for the first stage, including internal roads, essential facilities and memorial spaces.

2027
Expected opening
January 2027 marks the expected opening of the first stage, representing decades of planning and community collaboration.
